World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

As many councils begin to change the way they deliver aged care throughout the community, they remain as passionate as ever about ensure positive ageing experiences for their constituents.

That’s why the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) is highlighting World Elder Abuse Awareness Day today, June 15.

Elder abuse is everyone’s business. While Ageism is a broad problem in our community impacting older Victorian’s confidence, quality of life, job prospects, health and control over life decisions, in its extreme form is a factor contributing to elder abuse.

The MAV has worked closely with councils, advocacy groups and relevant authorities to tackle ageism for many years in an attempt to limit its impacts on older people within our communities.

MAV President Cr David Clark said World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was an opportunity to highlight a scourge that communities everywhere are determined to alleviate.

“Ageism, similar to other ‘isms, impacts people of all ages, but particularly older people. Elder abuse is the extreme result of ageism.” Cr Clark said.

“According to the World Health Organisation, prevalence rates or estimates exist only in selected developed countries – ranging from 1 to 10 per cent. While the extent of elder mistreatment is hard to measure, its social and moral significance is obvious.

“The MAV will continue to work with our members to ensure we’re considering the issue of ageism through meetings, events and communications – leading by example on this critical problem.

“It is important to raise awareness about elder abuse, to ensure older people are respected and included within our community,” Cr Clark said.
