Ensuring support is available to people impacted by family violenceWhen undertaking family violence prevention work there is a good chance someone will disclose that they have experienced, witnessed or used violence. The MAV does not provide direct support in relation to family violence, however, if you or someone you know is impacted by sexual assault, domestic or family violence, you can call 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732) or visit 1800respect.org.au. If someone is in immediate danger call 000. If someone is concerned about their own behaviour they can contact the Men’s Referral Service on 1300 766 491 or visit ntv.org.au. You can also find out about the supports available through your council and services in your local area. |
MAV produced resources
The MAV has produced a number of resources to assist councils and showcase their work to prevent family violence and all forms of violence against women. Some of these resources also assist councils to promote gender equality.

Our Watch is a national leader in the primary prevention of violence against women and their children in Australia. They have produced a number of important evidence-based frameworks providing the foundation for a coordinated and effective national approach to preventing violence against women in Australia. National Community Attitudes Survey Towards Violence Against Women
The National Community Attitudes towards Violence against Women Survey, or the NCAS, is a resource for anyone wanting to understand and prevent the serious and prevalent problem of violence against women overseen by Australia’s National Research Organisation for Women’s Safety (ANROWS). It has been conducted four times between 1995 and 2017, and aims to measure community attitude and understanding of violence against women, what influences their perspective and if it has changed over time. It also addresses gender equality and willingness to intervene when confronted by violence or its drivers. The NCAS was conducted again in 2021 with a report due for release before the end of 2022.
Reports have also been published specifically on people born in non-main English speaking countries and young people’s attitudes towards violence against women.
- A commitment to ongoing NCAS is a part of the National Plan to Reduce Violence Against Women and Their Children 2010-2022 (PDF - 722KB).
- The 2017 survey and cohort specific reports conducted by ANROWS are now available.
- The 2013 reports can be accessed via the VicHealth website.
